136th day of 1989.
Jezzro2004 - Posted - 03/24/2011: 16:27:33
Cool, so the 587 is the probably like the number of the banjo made for that date and year?
Darcy - Posted - 03/24/2011: 16:32:35
More like that was the 587 instrument stamped that day. But not necessarily. The last three digits aren't as precise.
El Dobro - Posted - 03/24/2011: 18:02:48
It wouldn't be from 1989. By then, the serial number was on the rim, not the peghead.
beegee - Posted - 03/25/2011: 06:56:17
If this banjo was the 87th instrument stamped at the Nashville plant on May 16, 1989, is it not possible that it could have been made before they moved the location of the stamp to the rim, or did they move the location when Greg came to Gibson in 1983(or whenever it was)?

Yes, by 1989 the format of the serial number changed, and was located on the rim. It would have followed the format. Model - Last 2 digits of year - sequential number, so a RB 250 serial number from 1989 would look something like this
250 - 89 - XXX
I believe the serial number with made in the USA was a 70s gibson thing. Does it have the thin black painted rim?

It's a good reminder. Don't trust serial numbers. Even when there was a convention it wasn't consistent. Better to use visual cues.
beegee - Posted - 03/25/2011: 19:18:41
Here's an RB-250 from the classifieds(sold) that was reportedly a Rich era banjo. 90081301 would be Jan 8, 1991, Nashville plant 3rd instrument stamped that day
El Dobro - Posted - 03/25/2011: 19:58:44
I guess Gibson's not sure of what they did. This is a serial number chart from their site, the banjos are near the bottom.

Well, yeh. Gibson has never done anything the same way for any period of time. I learned a long time ago not to try to make sense of anything Gibson did. Chances are, if you wrote Gibson about this, they'd tell you the records were lost in a fire, etc..

This is my 1990 250. Sold to me in good trust as a 1990 Gibson 250. No indication that it is not (as of yet!).

The only time that I know of that Gibson stamped 'Made in the USA' on the pegheads of
any banjos meant for sale in the U.S. was around 1973-74. That didn't change when Greg
was there. Greg or Doug Hutchens either one could verify that.

Greg and Doug musta been feeling patriotic with a new job at Gibson and imprinted 'Made in the USA' on each masterpiece :)
